About
K. Gerald Marsden, professor of psychology in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts and professor of psychology in psychiatry in the Medical School, retired from active faculty status on May 31, 1993.
Professor Marsden received his B.A degree in 1958 from the University of Wisconsin and his M.A and Ed.D. degrees from Harvard University in 1960 and 1967, respectively. He came to the University of Michigan in 1967 as a lecturer in psychology and an instructor in psychiatry. He was promoted in both departments to assistant professor in 1968, associate professor in 1972, and professor in 1977.
Throughout his career at Michigan, Professor Marsden has willingly assumed large administrative roles, and has carried out each one with distinction. He coordinated the extension service teaching in psychology from 1971-81 and served as chief psychologist for youth services (psychiatry) from 1972-74. Professor Marsden was director of the Counseling Center from 1978-87 and director of the Psychological Clinic beginning in 1983. In addition to all of this, he chaired the graduate program in clinical psychology from 1976-84. Professor Marsden's extensive committee service has ranged from the LSA Human Subjects Review Committee to the psychiatry department's Ad Hoc Committee on Governance.
An effective teacher, supervisor, and mentor, Professor Marsden has taught courses in clinical assessment, research methods, and child psychopathology. His work is broad in scope and covers problems important for society as well as for clinical practice. Further, his breadth and depth of knowledge in child development and adjustment has had a remarkable impact on his students and colleagues. Professor Marsden's research on content analysis studies is noteworthy, and he has also made distinguished contributions in the area of children's perception of their emotionally disturbed peers. He has provided a valuable model of a clinician who is an effective diagnostician and psychotherapist, at the same time carrying out research that is relevant to clinical practice.
The Regents now salute this distinguished faculty member for his dedicated service by naming K Gerald Marsden Professor Emeritus of Psychology and Professor Emeritus of Psychology in Psychiatry.
