Here’s a ritual you should do before your doctor’s appointments
Keep calm and remember more.
A study released Monday from the University of Michigan says meditation before seeing the doctor helps patients listen and understand health messages better. The research revealed that meditation produced “positive, low arousal affect,” causing patients to remember more pieces of information.
Any negative emotions such as shame, fear or anxiety can make patients focus on one or two details while ignoring the rest, said Koji Takahashi, a psychology graduate student and study’s lead author.
“A negative affect drives attention away from unpleasant or threatening information,” said Allison Earl, assistant professor of psychology and study’s co-author.
