Joining a group of developmental science and neuroscience scholars, Professor Daniel Keating was a contributor to and signer of an amicus brief arguing the basis for extending the protection from sentences of life without parole (LWOP) for youth through age 20 to the Massachusetts Supreme Court. That Court has now ruled that LWOP sentences can not be imposed up to the age of 21, argued before the Court by a group from Cooley Law. Similar cases led to the extension of protections in Michigan up to age 19, and a decision is pending in a California case, both of which were supported in amicus briefs by the same group of scientists.
