David Dunning, along with his collaborator Julian Kruger (NYU), won the 2023 Grawemeyer Award in Psychology. According to the Grawemeyer website, the award is given “for original and creative ideas: ideas that possess clarity, power and that substantially impact the field of psychology.” The award recognizes researchers who have developed a specific idea or theory that has significantly impacted the field. Dunning and Kruger received this award for a widely cited idea that was first described in their 1999 study Unskilled and Unaware of It: How Difficulties in Recognizing One’s Own Incompetence Lead to Inflated Self-Assessments, also known as the Dunning-Kruger effect.
