If someone told you a couple of decades ago that your LSA degree might prepare you for a career designing ethical AI or revamping social infrastructures to accommodate driverless cars, would you have believed them?

When I was a graduate student in LSA, there was no Google. Today, Google is the ubiquitous starting point for questions of all types, including personal, professional, and scholastic ones. The future has always had a knack of surprising us and, now more than ever, our students need to be prepared for what comes next—not with myopic instruction that merely satisfies the needs of today, but through an expansive introduction to the breadth as well as the depth of a liberal arts and sciences education.

In the College of LSA, we work diligently to prepare students for the next chapter of their lives and to empower them to succeed. Just as alumni who graduated 20 years ago could not have anticipated the entirety of today’s social media ecosystem and job landscape, our current students and recent graduates will face similar surprises as they navigate their future careers in the coming decades.

What remains constant is the versatility and intellectual confidence fostered by a liberal arts and sciences education. An LSA education doesn’t just prepare students for the jobs of today. Our education future-proofs them for opportunities and challenges we cannot yet imagine. Our curriculum cultivates adaptable thinkers, creative problem-solvers, strong communicators, and purpose-driven leaders.

I often hear from alumni who have built unique paths by combining passions in exciting ways, reinventing themselves as industries evolve, and leading change across numerous disciplines. Their stories confirm what we know to be true: The broad perspectives, curiosity, and resilience that define a liberal arts and sciences graduate are exactly what is needed in an uncertain world. Their skill sets are highly valuable, marketable, and necessary.

We know the future will surprise us. With an education from the College of LSA and the strength of our alumni network, our graduates will be ready.
