New Graduate Degrees & Certificates

Departments in LSA must first submit a proposal to the LSA Dean’s Office for a preliminary review. Proposals should be submitted to LSA Graduate Education and the LSA divisional associate dean.

During this phase, there may be some questions asked of you to clarify points in the proposal. The Dean’s Office will review the proposal for budgetary impacts and to make sure it complies with LSA policies. The LSA Executive Committee will be the ultimate authority to review the proposal on behalf of the College. Once that is complete, the proposal will go to Rackham for review.

The Rackham Executive Board reviews and approves new programs at biweekly meetings during the academic year. The Board meets from mid/late September to early April each academic year.

After approval by Rackham, the proposal for a new degree program is reviewed by the Michigan Association of State Universities (MASU). MASU meets quarterly to give final approval for new programs. Graduate certificates do not need MASU approval. New programs may not advertise or recruit and admit students until MASU confirms approval.

For details about what must be included in the proposal, please refer to the Rackham website, or reach out to LSA Graduate Education with any questions.
