The College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (LSA) Graduate Students Teaching as Instructor of Record policy allows graduate students to teach at the 300/400 level across the College.
The policy applies to graduate students selected by LSA departments to teach either an established/existing department course, or a course of their own design, at the 300 or 400 level in any semester (fall/winter/Term III).
Students must submit an application for College review/approval prior to teaching.
Eligibility
- All students must first be selected and approved by the department to teach as instructor of record at the 300/400 level.
- Students must meet the LSA training requirements.
- Those applying to teach a course of their own design must be a PhD candidate, AND are expected to have worked with a UM faculty supervisor/mentor to develop a “special topics” course (300/400 level) that is based on their own research or dissertation topic that will help prepare them for the job market.
Deadline: Rolling, but applications should be sent to the LSA Dean’s Office for approval well in advance and prior to the course being listed in the LSA Course Guide.
Application Process
- Once selected and approved by the department, students must complete the "LSA Graduate Students Teaching as Instructor of Record" online application through InfoReady Review.
- The application asks the student to provide contact information for their dissertation advisor, graduate chair, and (if applicable) faculty mentor/supervisor, who all must approve of the application. The application also asks for contact information for a department staff member (e.g., chief administrator, student services manager, graduate coordinator).
- The LSA Dean’s Office will review applications in the order that they are submitted, and notifications of final decisions will be sent by email. Department contacts will be copied on all notifications.

Please Note: Approval as the instructor of record does not automatically imply approval of the offering of the course itself; other considerations at the department's discretion, including enrollments, may factor into whether the course is offered.
