Professor David Chung

A recent article in The Michigan Daily by Ian Joo, traces the history of the Koryo-Saram, ethnic Koreans whom Stalin forcibly deported from the Russian Far East to Kazakhstan in 1937. To prepare for the article, Joo sat down for a virtual meeting with Nam Center faculty member and co-director of the documentary “Koryo Saram: The Unreliable People,” David Chung. Through his interviews with Chung and others, Joo explores the Koryo-Saram’s cultural resilience and community survival through the blending of Korean and Kazakh traditions.
