Each year, LACS recognizes one PhD student with the Alfredo D. & Luz Maria P. Gutierrez Dissertation Award. The award of $24,054 goes to one Ph.D. candidate to support dissertation write-up. We particularly encourage applications of students whose dissertation projects have interdisciplinary appeal. The recipient of the award is expected to concentrate their efforts during the period of the award on writing the dissertation.
Required materials: In addition to a letter of recommendation from the dissertation adviser, applications require the student’s thesis prospectus, a one-page statement of purpose, and CV.
Selection criteria include: The clarity and coherence of the statement of purpose and prospectus, multidisciplinary appeal, and the extent to which the student's research is innovative and evidence-based.
The Donors
Since 2008, the Alfredo D. & Luz Maria P. Gutierrez Fellowship in Latin American Studies Fund has supported innovative and interdisciplinary student scholarship at the University of Michigan. Alfredo Gutierrez graduated from U-M with his Ph.D. in economics in 1974 and his wife, Luz Maria Gutierrez, is a gifted painter. After a long career with the World Bank based in Colombia, Dr. Gutierrez served as president of J.P. Morgan Brazil before founding a private equity firm focused on companies doing business in Latin America. Now retired, the Gutierrez family direct their philanthropy toward several important education initiatives. Read more about Alfredo D. & Luz Maria P. Gutierrez in this Rackham Alumni Spotlight.
