Alfredo D. & Luz Maria P. Gutierrez Dissertation Award for Graduate Students

Each year, LACS recognizes one Ph.D. student with the Alfredo D. & Luz Maria P. Gutierrez Dissertation Award. We particularly encourage applications of students whose dissertation projects have interdisciplinary appeal. The award recipient is expected to concentrate on writing the dissertation during the award period.

This award goes to one Ph.D. candidate to support dissertation write-up. The award amount will be the GSI rate for academic year 2026-27. Updated rates will be announced in summer of 2026. This award does not cover tuition, fees, or GradCare. In 2025-26, the award was $29,192.

Application Deadline: March 1 at 11:59 p.m.

Eligibility

Open to U-M Ann Arbor doctoral students, regardless of citizenship, enrolled in a degree program.

Application Components

Please submit the following application materials by 11:59 p.m., March 1.

The application includes:  

  • Online Application
  • Statement of Purpose: One page dissertation overview with timeline for completion
  • Letter of recommendation from the dissertation adviser
  • Dissertation prospectus (20 pages maximum)
  • CV

Selection Process: A selection committee composed of faculty affiliated with the Center for Latin American & Caribbean Studies will evaluate applications on the following criteria: clarity and coherence of the statement of purpose and prospectus, multidisciplinary appeal, innovative approaches and original contributions to field of study, overall quality of the application. Students who have completed a dissertation chapter but are not yet on the job market are best positioned for this award.

The Donors

Since 2008, the Alfredo D. & Luz Maria P. Gutierrez Fellowship in Latin American Studies Fund has supported innovative and interdisciplinary student scholarship at the University of Michigan. Alfredo Gutierrez graduated from U-M with his Ph.D. in economics in 1974 and his wife, Luz Maria Gutierrez, is a gifted painter. After a long career with the World Bank based in Colombia, Dr. Gutierrez served as president of J.P. Morgan Brazil before founding a private equity firm focused on companies doing business in Latin America.
