The University of Michigan’s Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (LACS) is committed to promoting a broader and deeper understanding of the region-its histories, cultures, and peoples. As a Department of Education designated National Resource Center (NRC), our center’s outreach efforts are designed to support and strengthen opportunities for professional development for educators and curriculum development related to the Latin America and Caribbean region. In conjunction with the Title VI Grant’s absolute and competitive priorities, our outreach activities are designed to provide high-quality, innovative programming to support K-12 educators in their efforts to integrate LACS into the classroom and at their respective institutions, with particular attention to underserved student populations.
Purpose
The Teacher Advisory Committee advises, assesses, and assists the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies in its efforts to provide high-quality, outreach activities for K-12 educators in the State of Michigan, Puerto Rico and beyond.
Vision
As the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies, we envision our efforts to ultimately become a national standard for area studies outreach-culturally inclusive and humble in its approach, participant-led and meaningful in its design, and that makes a positive impact on students and educators in becoming global citizens.
Eligibility
A demonstrated commitment to globalized, inclusive education and pedagogy.
At least 10 years teaching experience within the K-12 system.
Familiarity with the LACS region.
Experience participating in the University of Michigan’s International Institute events and outreach activities (preferred).
Responsibilities
- Assist LACS staff, members, and affiliates gain a greater understanding of K-12 educators’ needs, concerns, and growth opportunities.
- Provide regular, constructive feedback on outreach activities and processes.
- Participate in monthly virtual meetings and meet individually with the LACS outreach coordinator as needed.
- Each member will work on key strategic outreach areas of need*. These include five main areas: Promotion, Pedagogy & Resources, Partnerships, Assessment and Event Coordination.
- Attend and participate in at least two outreach events through the International Institute.
- Serve at least one year term (July 1st to June 30th) with a potential renewable term.
