Indigenous Studies Network

Mission Statement

The Indigenous Studies Network @ LACS brings together faculty from across the University of Michigan who study Indigenous languages, cultures, worldviews, and social movements from that part of Abya Yala or Ixachitlan that is often referred to as Latin America and the Caribbean. The network organizes an annual lecture series on a rotating theme within Indigenous Studies, and it functions as a hub for collaborative research and curriculum development. Our courses provide students with opportunities to learn about the roughly 42 million Indigenous peoples whose communities span from North American Mexico to the Southern Cone of Argentina and Chile. We also proudly offer language instruction in Nahuatl and Quechua and facilitate the study of other Indigenous languages from the region as members of the Indigenous, Latin American, and Caribbean Studies (ILACS) Consortium
