LACS’s efforts to support community colleges include co-hosting a film screening at Oakland Community College to inspire dialogue around the theme of migration. Over 30 students, faculty and community members participated in a viewing of the award winning US - Mexico production, La Misma Luna (2007) and learned about the personal journeys of immigrant students and faculty. Outreach Coordinator Chris Jensen shared facts and figures on the contributions of the immigrant community to the state of Michigan and the US.
LACS also continues to support the Midwest Institute for International and Intercultural Education (MIIIE). Jensen participated, moreover, in a conference in Cleveland in late March for over 40 faculty representing dozens of local community colleges to share their experiences in globalizing the curriculum. And finally, members of the Curriculum Team at Southeast Community College (SCC) in Lincoln, Nebraska presented how LACS support has enabled them to bring Latin American literature into their UPWARD prison education program, develop collaborations with El Centro de las Américas community center, and incorporate LAC regional content into social psychology courses.
