Dear LACS community,
Welcome back! We have a lot of exciting initiatives and programming scheduled for the 2024-2025 academic year. Here are some highlights:
We are launching an Indigenous Studies Program and Annual Lecture Series. This year’s theme is Indigenous traditions of resistance to extractivism, and speakers for the fall term include Glen Coulthard (Yellowknives Dene) and Lorena Kab’nal (Q’eqchí Maya).
We are exploring new ways to enhance the study of Brazil and of Portuguese at Michigan. This effort has already begun with the recent hire of our Afro-Brazilian Studies Research and Teaching Fellow, Ryan Morrison.
We are creating new opportunities for faculty and students to collaborate with our partners at the University of Puerto Rico. This will include hosting library residents during the academic year and organizing a research symposium on the island.
We are working with colleagues at San Diego State University to build upon the recent success of our Global Migration Education Initiative. Our binational workshop in San Diego and Tijuana made international news last month for its innovative approach to pedagogy design and for its contributions to fostering community among educators across the US/Mexico border.
We are hiring a research assistant to amplify our communications and outreach efforts. The job description can be found here; please help us circulate it to potential candidates.
Stay tuned for more details about these and other initiatives at the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies.
Best wishes,
Gavin Arnall
