Funding Opportunities

With funding from the U.S. Department of Education, the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (LACS) at the University of Michigan (U-M) offers the following outreach grant opportunities on an annual basis.

For UPR instructors and educators only:

Curriculum Development Program in Latin American and Caribbean Studies for Faculty from the University of Puerto Rico (UPR)

Faculty members from UPR working on or interested in developing curriculum materials related to Latin American and/or Caribbean studies are invited to apply for grants to conduct library research, examine instructional materials, and consult with U-M faculty at the U-M campus in Ann Arbor. Applicants must identify a specific curriculum development project to be pursued. Grants will cover travel to U-M, meals and lodging on or near campus for up to a week, and a $150 allowance for books and photocopying. A final report on this project is due October 1Funding cannot be used to develop curriculum materials on Puerto Rico or Puerto Rican studies. Travel must occur between  April 15 and August 14. Application deadline: March 16.

World History and Literature Initiative Grants for Pre-service and In-service Education Instructors

In-service instructors from Escuela Secundaria de la Universidad de Puerto Rico and pre-service students at the graduate level from UPR’s College of Education who are interested in developing teaching units related to Latin American and/or Caribbean studies are invited to apply for travel grants to participate in the World History and Literature Initiative (WHaLI) Workshop for Teachers at U-M. Grants may be used to cover travel, lodging, meals, and incidentals for a for a three to five day visit to Ann Arbor. Application deadline: March 16.
 

For instructors and educators from UPR, MSIs, and other community colleges

Professional Development Travel Grants for Language and Area Studies Faculty

Faculty members from UPR, Community Colleges, or MSIs working on language, research, or teaching topics related to Latin American and/or Caribbean studies are invited to apply for travel grants to present at or participate in domestic or international conferences, symposia, and workshops related to Latin American and/or Caribbean studies. Funding can be used to attend workshops on less commonly taught languages, such as Quechua, Nahuatl, Portuguese, and Haitian Creole. Grants may be used to cover travel, lodging, conference fees, meals, and incidentals. Funding cannot be used to support participation in Puerto Rican studies conferences or workshops. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and are subject to funding availability.
