The Program in International and Comparative Studies (PICS) is thrilled to congratulate Michael Bryant, a dedicated PICS/Economics student, on his participation in the highly competitive Fulbright UK Summer Institute. This esteemed program, which supports up to 60 U.S. undergraduate students, works to advance knowledge, promote civic engagement and develop compassionate leaders through education exchange between the peoples of the US and the UK.
Michael spent three transformative weeks in the UK this past summer, immersing himself in the study of British Cultural Heritage.
Reflecting on his journey, Michael shared,
“In an action-packed three weeks, I, along with students from around the world, journeyed across England to explore some of its most important heritage sites. I kicked off in Liverpool with trips to Hill Dickinson Stadium, Anfield (Go Manchester United, though), and the Beatles Museum. From there, I visited Stratford-upon-Avon—the birthplace of William Shakespeare—where I learned (with near certainty) that he was not, in fact, a mythical character invented to torment my 9th grade self. I then visited Oxford, London, and many sites across the West Midlands.”
The Fulbright Summer Institutes are uniquely open to undergraduates, providing a rare and remarkable chance to learn about the UK’s rich heritage, develop leadership skills, and build international networks at an early stage of their academic journey. For Michael, the experience solidified the importance of cross-cultural study and the benefits of international opportunities. “I learned so much about not only the UK and its heritage, but also of the diverse cultures and traditions of the international students studying alongside me. At a time when Fulbright and many other international education programs are at risk, I sincerely hope future students will have the same opportunities as myself.”He extends his heartfelt thanks to the Fulbright US-UK Commission, Professors David Zeglen and Ian Shin, and the International Institute advising office for their invaluable support throughout the application process.
