The Global Migration Education Initiative (GMEI), a collaborative project by the University of Michigan (U-M) and San Diego State University (SDSU) is designed to provide innovative professional development opportunities for K-12 and Community College Educators in California and Michigan. The project is funded by a Title VI National Resource Center Grant from the US Department of Education.
Through global case studies and community site dialogues, the program offers participants a unique opportunity to learn about and from educators and community leaders working to make educational systems more responsive and inclusive for migrant and refugee students.
Throughout the program, educators engage in a series of discussions and experiential learning activities that deepen their understanding of global migration and how to incorporate culturally sustaining teaching strategies into their practice. With hands-on support from University of Michigan curriculum specialists, participants gain valuable insights into designing engaging curricula and implementing student-centered teaching approaches aligned with an annual theme.
