Joanne Motiño Bailey

Women’s and Gender Studies faculty members Joanne Motiño Bailey and Erica Marsh were named 2025 Health Care Heroes by Crain’s Detroit Business.

Joanne Motiño Bailey, CNM, PhD, is a Collegiate Lecturer in the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies and the director of Nurse-Midwives at Michigan Medicine. For Dr. Bailey, “it’s all about trying to make sure we’re taking care of the patients at the right time, in the right place.” She recently helped create MiHeart, a remote outpatient program that allows patients with a hypertensive disorder diagnosis in pregnancy to be discharged while continuing to have their blood pressure and symptoms monitored via a text program. Read more about Dr. Bailey's work here.

Erica Marsh

Erica Marsh, MD, MSCI, is a University Diversity and Social Transformation Professor, S. Jan Berhman Collegiate Professor of Reproductive Medicine, Professor of Obstetrics & Gynecology, Professor of Women’s and Gender Studies, and Section Head of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility. Dr. Marsh spearheads research on biological, social and genetic factors that contribute to reproductive disorders and disparities in reproductive health. She is the founding director of the Women’s Health and Reproductive Disparities Collaborative, which recently received a $7.8 million grant to study health disparities as they relate to uterine fibroids. Read more about Dr. Marsh's work here.
