In her new book, Black Opera: History, Power, Engagement (University of Illinois Press, 2018), Women's Studies Professor Naomi André takes an innovative approach towards understanding the relationship between opera and modern audiences. Using what she calls "engaged musicology," Professor André provides an explanation of how opera continues to evolve in the context of race. Professor André appeared on podcasts for both the New Books Network and View Points Radio, and was interviewed by National Sawdust, to discuss her work.
