Abortion and the Global Battle for Gender Equality

Barbara Crane will review progress in the pursuit of abortion rights globally and the role of women's movements. Dr. Crane will also discuss the often uneasy relationships between abortion rights advocates and international institutions and networks working for gender equality.

Dr. Crane has served since 2000 on the Executive Team of Ipas, an international nongovernmental organization based in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, founded in 1973, whose mission is to reduce maternal deaths and injuries due to unsafe abortion and advance women’s sexual and reproductive rights.  From 1992 to 2000, Dr. Crane served as senior policy adviser in the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Office of Population.  She has published widely on reproductive health policy issues and holds a PhD in political science from the University of Michigan and an MA from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy.
