Major: Earth and Environmental Sciences
Hometown: Bay City, MI
Where did you transfer from? Delta College
Why did you choose to transfer to the University of Michigan? I transferred to U of M because I wanted to stay close to home. I applied to other universities in Michigan, but ultimately chose U-M because of financial reasons. I also loved how the classes for my major seemed very hands-on (and they are).
Based on your personal experience, what is the one thing you want to tell new transfer students? Put yourself out there and meet new people. You’ll never know the opportunities that you can have if you don’t connect with the people around you.
How did you make friends and meet other students on campus? I met most of my friends through the Transfer Student Center. I also attended other transfer specific events like aMplify nights and M-Connect dinners.
What is your favorite part about being an LSA transfer student? My favorite part about being a transfer student deals with the lessons I've learned along the transfer process. I’ve learned that even if I feel like I will be rejected, it will be worth a try because you never know what will happen. Also, I would always sell myself short in the past. When I first transferred here, I did not feel like I belonged here or was smart enough to be here. After gaining self confidence, I realize that I deserve to be here just like everyone else.
What do you know now that you wished you knew before transferring to the University of Michigan? I wish I had known where to go to make friends. Personally, I was very shy when I first transferred here and did not make friends in my classes. Once I started going to the TSC and aMplify nights, I started seeing familiar faces and felt more comfortable talking to people.
Why did you choose your specific major(s)? I’ve loved science my whole life, so I knew I always wanted to go into STEM. In high school, I narrowed my decision down to either Environmental Science or Biotechnology. Once I looked into what my life would look like long term, I felt like I would be happier and feel more fulfilled by pursuing environmental science. I’ve loved everything I've learned so far and do not regret a thing. My major is very hands-on, which makes learning fun.
