Why did you choose to transfer to the University of Michigan?
Transitioning to a new school can feel daunting, especially coming from a first-generation out-of-state college background. When I first began searching for schools that matched my educational and career interests I came across the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (LSA) of University of Michigan. LSA offers distinctive support services that aren’t offered at every university, and this would make my transition smoother, as I am coming from two thousand miles away. LSA offers a fascinating Transfer Student Center where transfer students can meet other like-minded scholars from all walks of life, which is incredibly valuable, as transferring to a large institution can be overwhelming.
Based on your personal experience, what is the one thing you want to tell new transfer students?
Never Give Up and Just Do It!
How did you make friends and meet other students on campus?
This past summer of 2023, I was a part of Assisting Latino Students to Maximize Achievement (ALMA), where I had the opportunity to connect and engage with incoming Latino first-year and transfer students from various parts of the country. Through ALMA, I established relationships with Latino students who share similar backgrounds and lived experiences, thus creating a sense of belonging at such a large public university like the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
Why did you choose your specific major(s)?
I chose to transfer to the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor for its academic and professional resources that have allowed me to progress in my Pre-Law and Pre-Doctoral tracks as an undergraduate. Michigan has among the strongest Sociology and Education programs in the country, which has allowed me to learn and engage from world-renowned faculty in their respective fields. Through the LSA curriculum, I discovered University of Michigan’s Sociology major that offers a unique Law, Justice, and Social Change (LJSC) sub-major. The LJSC sub-major offers specific courses in American Immigration and relevant eye-opening topics that align with my educational and career interests in pursuing law school. LSA’s Sociology and LJSC sub-major have helped me understand social issues that affect underrepresented, marginalized groups of our society.
