Major: Earth and Environmental Sciences
Minor: Environment
Hometown: Chicago, IL
Where did you transfer from? Pitzer College
Why did you choose to transfer to the University of Michigan? I chose the University of Michigan because of its resources and reputation. I knew what I wanted to study when I was looking into transferring, so a huge focus of mine was applying to programs with good environmental science and studies programs. I also just wanted to be at a bigger college and university. Being at Michigan has allowed me to get involved in research, try different extracurriculars, and be surrounded by so much school spirit.
Based on your personal experience, what is the one thing you want to tell new transfer students? Put yourself out there and try new things! When I first transferred it was overwhelming and stressful, but I tried to take advantage of the different opportunities and resources being offered to me. This helped me learn the resources at the university, start to build community, and ensure my success at and beyond being at the University of Michigan.
How did you make friends and meet other students on campus? I have honestly met people in a lot of different places. A majority of this has been through my classes and department’s events. The Earth department is pretty small, so it’s very common to have multiple classes with people and start to recognize familiar faces.
What is your favorite part about being an LSA transfer student? My favorite part is the transfer community and people I have met through transfer events! There is an instant bond and understanding we have between each other when it comes to the unique experience that is being a transfer student. Additionally, the transfer community is so diverse, so I have really enjoyed getting to know people and learning about their journey they took before coming to Michigan.
What do you know now that you wished you knew before transferring to the University of Michigan? People are easy to reach and want to help you! While I was trying to navigate transferring my credits and creating my academic plan, I realized that professors and administration are very accessible here even though it is such a large school. Even over the summer, I was able to set up meetings and get everything sorted before I started in the fall.
Why did you choose your specific major(s)? I had a previous interest in environmental topics at the beginning of college, but I did not know what I wanted to major in. I chose Earth and Environmental sciences because I wanted a more STEM-focused major and to have a strong background in environmental science.
