Where did you transfer from? Wayne County Community College (WCCCD)
Why did you choose to transfer to the University of Michigan? Premier higher learning institution in the state, robust liberal arts college, vast resources and generous financial aid package, recruited by M-Connect, and it is really the only place I want to be.
Based on your personal experience, what is the one thing you want to tell new transfer students? The university will consistently push a lot of information to you. Do not get overwhelmed and ignore the communications; develop a system to sort through emails and track the information. Follow up on critical items, and use your calendar.
How did you make friends and meet other students on campus? I am still making friends and getting to know the people in my cohort. I speak with classmates about their experience and life direction, and I have joined programs centered around transfer students where my peer mentors have done an excellent job in building relationships and establishing trust.
What is your favorite part about being an LSA transfer student? My favorite part about being an LSA transfer student is the opportunities for growth, learning, and connecting that spring up daily. Be it research, a panel, or a museum tour, the invitation to explore new ideas seems to be continuous. I feel a sense of accomplishment in knowing that I have matriculated to a great institution, and it really just feels like the right institution for me at the right time.
What do you know now that you wished you knew before transferring to the University of Michigan? Being a nontraditional student means that you may have to communicate proactively with different departments (i.e., housing, financial aid, etc.) to make sure that your experience is customized for your situation and phase of life. UMich onboards thousands of students each fall, and there are some default settings that can become obstacles if you are not aware of them.
Why did you choose your specific major(s)? I chose my specific major to complement the sum of my professional experiences, and in preparation for graduate school. I liked the idea of a small cohort that allowed for more direct access to faculty and resources which helps to develop and enhance my learning experience and professional pathway.
