Major: Communications
Hometown: Algonac, Michigan
Where did you transfer from? St. Clair Community College
Why did you choose to transfer to the University of Michigan? I chose to transfer to the University of Michigan because I fell in love with the campus and the people that I met here. My best friend goes here and I would come and visit her for weekends during our freshman and sophomore year. I just loved being on campus, and the people here were so nice and supportive. I just wanted to be a part of that community. Another reason I chose U-M was because of the academics; they are hard, but it really is a good school and there are lots of resources to help you succeed.
Based on your personal experience, what is the one thing you want to tell new transfer students? It gets easier. Things will be hard at first – this is potentially your first move away from home, going somewhere where you don’t know anyone, being in a new town. It gets better. Slowly everything will start to fall into place, you will get comfortable living in a new place, and you will make friends; it just takes time.
How did you make friends and meet other students on campus? I already had several friends on campus before coming to the university, but I have made a lot of friends by just going to events going on around campus and talking to people. Talk to the people that you sit next to in class; everyone wants to have friends in classes. Join clubs – joining clubs is a great way to make friends, and you will also get to have some great experiences. I also made friends by going to office hours and talking with the other students and working together to complete homework.
What is your favorite part about being an LSA transfer student? I love the Transfer Student Center – it is a great place to meet people and get some work done. Everyone in the TSC is super nice. You can also talk with other transfer students about their experiences and what helped them. Everyone understands what you are going through and they are there to help you. Overall, it is just a great place.
What do you know now that you wished you knew before transferring to the University of Michigan? One thing that I wish I knew before transferring to the University of Michigan was that the workload/course work is difficult. It is manageable though, you just have to find what works for you and manage your time. Time management is going to be your best friend.
Why did you choose your specific major(s)? I chose communication because it is something that I have always wanted to do. There are also so many things that you can do with a degree in communications – I can work in HR, marketing, TV and film, and more. I don’t know which path I want to follow yet, but I am excited about the possibilities.
