Where did you transfer from? Grand Rapids Community College
Why did you choose to transfer to the University of Michigan? Community college really helped me see my worth and what I was capable of. I was doing great academically, involved in the school, and had an outside job that I loved. I started to see the University of Michigan as an option after GRCC, something that was off the table in highschool. I was drawn in by UM’s top-rated academic program, countless resources, and flourishing social life in Ann Arbor. When I toured campus with the Transfer Bridges Program, I knew this was my home… Yes, it was that cheesy!
Based on your personal experience, what is the one thing you want to tell new transfer students? Don’t freak out when you start at Michigan! It’s easy to get overwhelmed by Michigan’s sheer size and high academic standards. It takes a minute to get used to but trust me, you will. Getting involved in groups helps you find like minded people and makes a big school feel a little smaller.
How did you make friends and meet other students on campus? I joined the transfer student Facebook page and found my three roommates that I live with currently. We’re all in the same boat as transfers and helped each other navigate Michigan. I also met people at aMplify events, the first semester transfer dinner, at Camp Davis this summer, and through joining clubs. Do things that interest you and the friends you make will follow. Clubs and organizations are truly the best way to meet people and feel a part of Michigan.
What is your favorite part about being an LSA transfer student? I love having different perspectives and outlooks on Michigan than students who have been here since freshman year. Because I have a shorter time at UM, I find myself using up and appreciating resources a lot more. The transfer community is also something to be proud of! It's a great group of people.
What do you know now that you wished you knew before transferring to the University of Michigan? I would tell my pre-Michigan self that everything will work itself out. So many changes came about my first semester but everything eventually panned out. It takes time and having faith in yourself. I wish I knew to have patience. Looking back, I wouldn’t change my experiences because I learned from my mistakes and came out of it stronger.
Why did you choose your specific major(s)? I love the environment and topics that surround energy policy, so Program in the Environment is the perfect major for me. I chose PITE because I could see a future career where I’m happy, successful, and standing on a stage saying “I’d like to thank PITE at the University of Michigan…”. I am genuinely interested in the classes I take and am surrounded by great people within my major.
