I left The Sweetland Writing Center with a fascination with the writing and editing process, having worked as a writing consultant for undergraduate and graduate students for several years. This experience led me to a career as an editorial writer. I then went on to pursue interests in education and cognition, working as a resource teacher at an international school before matriculating in a PhD program for school psychology at Michigan State University, where I aim to gain a deeper understanding of how students develop literacy. 8/19

Alexander Davidson is an author, secondary educator, certified reading specialist, and donut aficionado. He earned a BA from the University of Michigan and an MAT in Literacy Education from Madonna University. He has been a member of the National Council of Teachers of English since 2011 and has presented at multiple conferences at the local, state, national, and international level. While teaching reading and writing to middle school and high school students, Alexander Davidson strives to create written works that will interest his students and teach them valuable lessons at the same time. His first novel The Visitor's Choice: A Search to Make Things Right (Ferne Press, 2014) is the recipient of the Silver Award for Young Adult Books from Mom's Choice Awards and two awards from the Purple Dragonfly Book Awards for first place in Science Fiction/Fantasy/Paranormal and second place in Young Adult Fiction. He can typically be found Instagramming his current read alongside a photogenic beverage from the local coffee shop. 7/19

I practiced as a trial attorney at a mid-sized firm in Cincinnati for two years. Since graduating, I have held a few different positions. After graduate school, I went on to teach English Language Arts and Social Studies at the middle school level. From there, I transitioned into higher education, moved out of Michigan, and worked as an Academic Intervention Specialist in central Illinois. I also taught Reading Strategies, College Writing, and Global Culture/Study Abroad courses. Just a few months ago, I moved back to the mitten and now work for the Office of Education Abroad at Michigan State (don't misunderstand, I am a LOYAL Wolverine for life) as the Curriculum Integration Specialist. Ian Willhite currently serves as the Deputy National Press Secretary & Director of African American Messaging for the Beto for America campaign. Immediately prior to joining the campaign, Wilhite served as the Press Secretary and spokesperson for Lambda Legal, the nation's oldest and largest LGBTQ legal organization. During O’Rourke’s historic U.S. Senate campaign, Wilhite also served the Communications Director for African American Outreach. Wilhite began his career on the hill as an aide to both Congressman Joe Kennedy III of Massachusetts and Senator Debbie Stabenow of Michigan. Wilhite is a Michigan native who has a law degree from Boston College Law School and a bachelors degree from the University of Michigan’s Ford School of Public Policy. 10/19

I moved to New York City the summer after graduation, and began classes at Fordham University's School of Law. After graduating in 2014, and obtaining my legal license in 2015, I began my first legal job at a mid-size corporate firm in Times Square practicing Corporate Structuring and Securities Law. I then went to clerk for the Hon. Arthur F. Engoron at Manhattan's Supreme Civil Court. After almost three wonderful years with Justice Engoron, I joined the NYC-based law firm Warshaw Burstein, LLP as an Associate. In the meantime, I am also developing my repertoire as a real estate broker, assisting my friends and clients in purchasing their first-time homes and/or investment properties. From there, I taught high school English at a Michigan charter school for a year before relocating to Houston, TX. Currently, I am working as the Writing Specialist for the Chicago School of Professional Psychology’s Online Campus Writing Center, supporting students in writing their Master’s theses and Doctoral dissertations. I also provide editorial services as a contract editor for academic journals, book publishers, and collegiate assignments. In my work in higher education, I have been developing a program that provides embedded instructional/classroom support and teaching methods for faculty who work with linguistic minority students. The program will help instructors to support linguistic minority academic achievement through validation of linguistic identities and linguistically inclusive pedagogy that accounts for cross-linguistic, cross-cultural, and intercultural rhetoric differences. I have been presenting this work at conferences across the country, and am always surprised by how many people share a Michigan and Sweetland alumni background! 7/19

After earning my undergraduate degree from UM, I worked at Michigan Medicine as a Medical Scribe and in various research labs at UM. Since then, I have returned to school at UM to earn my Masters of Public Health in Epidemiology while also working as a Graduate Student Instructor in Biology. Currently, I am applying to Ph.D. programs that will allow me to further my education for an academic career around mental health. 7/19

My first job was as a research associate at a higher education technology firm, and now I work for KIPP DC, a public charter school system as a data analyst. After graduating, I continued my clinical research journey, and I am now a Clinical Psychology PhD candidate at the University of Connecticut. I use the skills I learned at Sweetland on a daily basis -- whether it's to write up and publish research findings, complete clinical documentation notes and reports, help my students with their essays and assignments, or provide feedback to colleagues and mentees -- writing continues to be an integral part of my career and life. 1/23

I've been working in management consulting at Capgemini Invent since January 2021. I send a lot of emails, and most of my job right now is creating communications for my client. I spent a year working as a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant in Germany after graduation. That experience convinced me that I wanted to pursue a career in education, so I returned to U of M to earn a Master's degree and become certified. Now, I teach middle school English in Bentonville, Arkansas. I use the interpersonal skills and writing expertise that I developed at Sweetland every day. 1/24

Today I serve as the Data & Impact Manager at an out of school time program based in Detroit, the Downtown Boxing Gym (DBG). Part of my role is overseeing the literacy mentoring program at DBG, which has historically utilized external volunteers. One of my favorite parts of my time at DBG has been helping build out peer mentoring within the academic department. Our high school students are now a significant percentage of our volunteers everyday. 1/24
