Steven Schaus teaches and writes about tort law, remedies, and moral and legal philosophy. He is interested in what we owe to each other, simply as a matter of interpersonal morality, and in when (and how) (and why) private law institutions like tort law might play a part in affirming (or adjusting) these standards. He’s also interested in questions about the nature of law and about the kinds of moral differences that legal institutions can make. Before joining the faculty at Michigan, he was law clerk for Judge Harry T. Edwards of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit and a fellow with the Project on the Foundations of Private Law at Harvard Law School. He holds a J.D. from Harvard Law School and a Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Michigan.
