Professor Elizabeth Anderson Awarded Guggenheim Fellowship
Professor Elizabeth Anderson been awarded a 2013 John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship. Â Guggenheim Fellowships are to assist research and artistic creation and are intended for men and women who have demonstrated exceptional capacity for productive scholarship or exceptional creative ability in the arts. This year, in its 89th annual competition, the Foundation awarded 175 Fellowships to a diverse range of scholars, artists, and scientists. Appointed on the basis of prior achievement and exceptional promise, the successful candidates were chosen from a group of almost 3000 applicants. Congratulations, Liz!
"Moral Epistemology from a Pragmatist Perspective: Case Studies from the History of Abolition and Emancipation"
Three centuries ago few people thought slavery was morally wrong. Over the course of two centuries of struggle to abolish slavery, nearly the whole world came to believe that slavery is profoundly unjust. Moral learning took place in and through this struggle. I am investigating how this was so, stressing the ways we learn moral lessons through experiments in living, and through contestation of unjust social orders from below.
