The Regents of the University of Michigan approved the appointment of Professor Jim Joyce as Cooper Harold Langford Collegiate Professor of Philosophy, effective Sept. 1, 2012. Jim personifies the selection criteria for this significant honor:

 

Collegiate Professorships should be offered to colleagues who are exemplars of our aspirations for excellence in all areas of our intellectual life together. [Collegiate Professors] should be outstanding in scholarship, as well as both undergraduate and graduate teaching, and be among those who provide significant leadership in the unit, the College, or the University. 

 

It is traditional for a newly appointed Collegiate Professor to choose a former member of the UM faculty to name that Professorship for. Jim chose Cooper Harold Langford, a philosophy professor here from 1929 to 1964.
