Echoes from the Past: Music-Making and the Politics of Listening and Relatedness in Turkey

Monday, October 8, 2012
4:00 AM
Michigan League, Kalamazoo

The Modern Greek Program will be co-sponsoring this Meditopos event featuring lyre-player and anthropologist Nikos Michailidis.  Nikos' research centers on the music of the Black Sea, host to a multitude of linguistic, cultural, and religious communities and traditions.  Examining the cultural politics of how communal memories are translated into music - and music into communal memories - this lecture attempts to trace out the process by which the multiple musical traditions of the Black Sea were homogenized within "National Turkish Culture" following the creation of the Turkish State in 1923.  Nikos Michailidis is currently writing his dissertation in Anthropology at Princeton.

In addition to presenting the historical, theoretical, cultural and political frameworks of his research, Nikos will also incorporate live musical performance into the lecture.
