Obtaining a Teacher Certification as a History Major
History majors who wish to earn a secondary teaching certificate in history must apply to the School of Education (SOE) certification program and take specific history courses required for a Michigan Provisional Teaching Certificate. These students remain in LSA to earn their bachelor's degree in history, adding the education course component to their program of study. If application is made in the sophomore year, it can be possible to complete all requirements in four years.
After consulting with History and SOE advisors, students may apply to the SOE certification program (select the option for "Currently Enrolled U-M Students"). Application during the sophomore year is encouraged. Application deadlines vary.

Teacher Certification Requirements
The State of Michigan requires that all teacher certification candidates have a teaching major. A teaching minor is optional. Students should plan ahead and consult with advisors in the SOE and the History Department to elect the right classes. The general requirements for a teaching certificate are described on the School of Education website.
