Maya Sudarkasa is a PhD Candidate in the Department of History at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. She studies 19th to 20th century United States social and intellectual histories; namely Civil War through the Global Black Renaissance. Her primary research questions consider race, freedom, citizenship, and capital in the long post-Reconstruction period. Her project probes the intersections of modern Western (Euro/American) epistemology, imperial and capitalist legacies in the Atlantic world, and early Pan-Africanisms. She recently passed her preliminary examinations with distinction, and completed her graduate certificate in African American and Diasporic Studies.
