Maya Sudarkasa is a graduate student in the Department of History at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. She studies 19th to 20th century United States social and intellectual histories; namely Emancipation through the Global Black Renaissance. Her primary research questions consider race, freedom, citizenship, and capital in the post-Civil War era. Her secondary research questions (or interests) probe modern Western (Euro/American) epistemologies, imperial and capitalist legacies in the Atlantic world, and mythologies of racial supremacy and exceptionalism. She recently passed her preliminary examinations with distinction, and completed her graduate certificate in African American and Diasporic Studies.
