Screening: Jogo de Corpo/Body Games

The 2015 Aiton Lecture featured speaker, Professor  Rohrig Assuncao will join us for a screening of the film Jogo do corpo, in which he and capoeira master, Mestre Cobra Mansa, travel to Angola to explore the transatlantic links between Brazilian and Angolan combat games.

Matthias Röhrig Assunção is professor of Latin American History at the University of Essex, United Kingdom. He is the author of Capoeira: The History of an Afro-Brazilian Martial Art (Routledge 2005) and De Caboclos a Bem-te-vis. Formação do Campesinato numa sociedade escravista, Maranhão 1800-1850 (Annablume, forthcoming 2015), and co-director of the documentary films Verses and Cudgels: Stickplaying in the Afro-Brazilian Culture of the Parnaiba Valley (2009) and Body Games: Capoeira and Ancestry (2014).
