- History 900 (Fall/Winter term) – Preparation for Preliminary Examinations
This course is taken with the chair of the prelim committee, usually in the major prelim field. - Preliminary Examinations (Fall or Winter term)
(1) a written examination consisting of a historiography paper and teaching portfolio or a 4-hour written exam in the student’s major field; (2) an oral examination in three or four fields (many students course off one of the four fields) - Second Language Requirement Fulfilled (non-Americanists only)
Non-Americanists must demonstrate proficiency in two languages prior to being advanced to candidacy. One of those languages is required for the 4th Semester Review; the other language may be finished in the second or third year. - Recommendation for Candidacy
Once all requirements for candidacy have been met, the department recommends the student to Rackham for advancement to candidacy: HIST 615, one additional 600-level history course, two seminars, two cognate courses, positive 4th Semester Review, and prelims passed, language requirement fulfilled, minimum of 18 graduate credits completed in residence, minimum GPA of 3.5 on 4-point scale. (Students in joint programs might have additional requirements for candidacy.)
