Forsyth Postdoc Research Fellow
About
Ella completed her PhD in History of Art at Johns Hopkins University in 2026. Her dissertation examined caryatids, or female architectural supports, in ancient Greek art and their later receptions using a feminist lens. She is also a co-editor of a volume about gender violence in art history titled Gender Violence, Art, and the Viewer: An Intervention (2024, Penn State Press). Her research has been supported by several fellowships, including a Fulbright Fellowship at the American School of Classical Studies, Athens, and she has worked at the Getty Villa and the British Museum, among other institutions. Ella also has a background in art writing and journalism, and enjoys writing exhibition reviews and articles for public-facing venues.
At Michigan, she will be working on her first book manuscript, building on her dissertation research to investigate caryatids in the ancient Mediterranean world and their relationship to gender, labor, and power in antiquity and the present.
