About
My research focuses on all aspects of ritual media in premodern Japan– from sculpture, to musical instruments, to prayer mandalas. More recently, I have been studying the social history and religious meaning of portable shrines (mikoshi 神輿) throughout the pre- and early-modern period in Japan.
Before coming to Michigan, I obtained my BA in History of Art and Classical Civilisations from Trinity College Dublin (2012). In 2017, while working for the Arts Council of England, I obtained an MA in History of Art from SOAS, University of London. In 2018, I was awarded a Monbukagakushō 文部科学省 Scholarship by the Government of Japan, which enabled me to continue my research at Kyushu University in Fukuoka, Japan, between 2018 and 2021, during which time I obtained a second MA in Japanese Humanities.
After a brief stint working in the tech industry in Dublin, I am excited to begin my PhD at the University of Michigan.
