About
Thesis: Memory and Engagement in Romulus’ Palatine Hut (supervised by Penelope Davies) Jared Burkart earned his MA in 2024 at the University of Texas at Austin under the direction of Dr. John R. Clarke and Dr. Penelope J. E. Davies. His research investigates Roman visual culture through the lenses of reception theory and viewer agency, specifically examining how ancient audiences – across social strata and over time – interpreted their cultural works. Jared’s commitment to pedagogy is rooted in experience. At the University of Texas, he served as a Teaching Assistant for two years, and at UW-Stevens Point’s Tutoring-Learning Center, he holds the distinction of being the longest-tenured Writing Lab consultant. His instructional background at UWSP includes Creative Writing as well as supplemental courses in Asian and Western Art History.
Since 2023, Jared has served as a Research Associate and Archaeologist for the Oplontis Project, an archaeological initiative studying the two sites of Oplontis, neighboring Pompeii.
