About the exhibit: George Bellows (1882–1925) was a painter, illustrator, and lithographer from Ohio who moved to and painted scenes of urban New York City. His 1909 painting, The Bridge, Blackwell’s Island depicting the Queensboro Bridge, was purchased by Edward Drummond Libbey and given to TMA in 1912. In this exhibition, art history students from the University of Michigan used The Bridge as a point of departure to curate a show that also includes works on paper by Bellows and works by other American Realist painters of that era.
