Poet Maya Angelou Dies at 86
Maya Angelou, the memoirist and poet best know for her landmark book, “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings” and the inaugural poem "On the Pulse of Morning" which she delivered in 1993 at the swearing-in of Bill Clinton, died today at 86. Says DAAS Faculty Member Martha Jones, "Maya Angelou was a giant. She was honest, fearless, and a risk-taker. She loved us
even when we did not know to love ourselves. Today I bought I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings for a young friend because no young woman should grow up without reading her early story. It is a book that still gives me hope, comfort, and companionship." For more information about her life see the New York Times online.
