This year marks several significant 50th anniversaries. Early in 1965, jazz saxophonist John Coltrane released the deeply spiritual and passionate album A Love Supreme, the defining work of his distinguished career and one of the most highly respected and beloved pieces of recorded music. Weeks later, Black activist Malcolm X, the orator and organizer who effectively advocated for social change in Black urban communities, was assassinated in New York. In this program, we will attempt to put these important men in dialogue. How are they linked, and what connects their art and politics? Join us for a discussion which will include readings, recordings, and an exhibit of important archival materials.
