"My International Studies background at the University of Michigan gave me both a strong academic foundation and the flexibility to explore different paths after graduation. Initially, I pursued graduate school in International Educational Development, where I deepened my understanding of global education systems, access, and equity. That experience built directly on my undergraduate studies and reinforced my interest in the intersection of education and global issues.
At the same time, living in New York City during and after graduate school opened my eyes to a different kind of opportunity. I realized how much I loved being in the city and working in a fast-paced, people-oriented environment. That ultimately led me to pivot into advancement and fundraising within independent education, where I now work at the Nightingale-Bamford School.
While my current role is not explicitly international, the skills and perspectives I gained through International Studies and my graduate program are incredibly relevant. I regularly conduct research, analyze complex information, and engage thoughtfully with a wide range of stakeholders—many of whom have diverse, global backgrounds. Just as importantly, my studies instilled a broader understanding of education as a tool for impact, which continues to shape how I approach my work.
One of the most valuable aspects of the International Studies major is that it doesn’t lock you into a single career path. Instead, it equips you with adaptable skills and a global perspective that can be applied across industries. For me, it provided the freedom to explore—from international development to education to fundraising—and ultimately find a path that aligns with both my interests and where I wanted to build my life."
