About
Dr. White is an Associate Professor of Strategic Management in the School of Management at the University of Michigan-Flint. He also serves as a Core Faculty member in the International and Global Studies Program at the University of Michigan-Flint, a Non-Resident Research Fellow with the Asian Institute of Management in the Philippines, and as a Visiting Professor at NIDA Business School in Thailand.
Dr. White's expertise lies in global strategy. His research studies ways in which the legal and regulatory environment influence multinational enterprise (MNE) strategic behavior and performance outcomes, primarily in Southeast Asia. Within this domain, he investigates: (1) phenomenon associated with MNE foreign subsidiary nonmarket strategies (business-government interaction, political ties, corruption), (2) how dimensions of legal and regulatory institutions affect foreign subsidiary strategic behavior and performance, and (3) MNE foreign subsidiary strategic initiatives as they relate to cooperative relationships and formal contracting. Dr. White is currently conducting a multi-year research study investigating the effects of legal and regulatory institutions on MNE strategic behavior and performance outcomes in the Philippines and Thailand. He has performed extensive fieldwork in Southeast Asia surveying senior executives of MNE foreign subsidiaries regarding strategy and performance. Dr. White's research has been published in a wide array of business journals including the Journal of World Business, Journal of International Management, International Business Review, Management International Review, Multinational Business Review, Thunderbird International Business Review, the International Journal of Emerging Markets, as well as leading international law journals such as the Texas International Law Journal and North Carolina Journal of Law & Commercial Regulation, among others. He serves as a member of the Editorial Board for the Journal of World Business, Journal of International Management, Multinational Business Review, Asia Pacific Journal of Management, Journal of Asia Business Studies, and the Journal of Asia-Pacific Business. He is currently serving as Guest Editor for a special issue concerning MNE nonmarket strategy in times of populism and geopolitical uncertainty at Multinational Business Review.
Dr. White has received several honors and awards, including the Best Reviewer Award from the Academy of International Business and Best Reviewer Award from the Academy of Management. At the University of Michigan-Flint, he has been honored by receiving the Win Cooper II Faculty Excellence Award, a Hagerman Faculty Entrepreneurship & Innovation Award, the Outstanding Faculty Award for Teaching, and several Golden Apple awards for teaching excellence. He also received a Shining Star award for teaching excellence at Old Dominion University. Dr. White studied Mandarin Chinese in Taiwan on an Academic Language Exchange Scholarship at Feng Chia University and was an alternate for the prestigious Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office (Ministry of Education) Chinese Language Scholarship.
Dr. White earned a B.A. in History (emphasis on Asia) from the University of Alabama in 1995 and a certificate in Mandarin Chinese from Feng Chia University in Taichung, Taiwan in 1997. He went on to earn a J.D. in Law and Certificate in International Law from Western Michigan University Cooley Law School in 2001; an LL.M. in International Commercial Law from the Graduate School of Law at Emory University in 2002; an MBA in General Management from the College of Business Administration at the University of Texas at El Paso in 2006; and a Ph.D. in International Business (emphasis in international strategy) from the College of Business Administration at the University of Texas at El Paso in 2008. He was also a post-graduate student in Asian studies at the Center for Asian Studies, University of Alabama.
Dr. White was previously an Associate Professor of Strategic Management and International Business in the Strome College of Business at Old Dominion University. Prior to attending the University of Texas at El Paso, Dr. White worked as a Research Fellow and Visiting Professor of International Business Law and Global Commerce at Hebei Normal University, where he was subsequently appointed as an Honorary Professor. He also taught as an Adjunct Professor of International Business Law and Global Commerce at the Shijiazhuang College of Law and Commerce in Shijiazhuang. While in China, he worked as a strategy consultant and was appointed by the municipal government as an Economic Adviser to the Shijiazhuang National Hi-Tech Industry Development Zone where he acted as a liaison to MNEs and advised on strategic matters. During graduate school he interned with the General Counsel’s Office of the United States Agency for International Development (Asia and Near East Bureau) in Washington, D.C. and taught English as a second language in Taiwan. Dr. White has facilitated and consulted on variety of projects concerning MNE strategy, foreign direct investment, and WTO rules and policies in Southeast Asia and China. He has studied, worked, and lived in the Philippines, Thailand, China, Taiwan, and Hungary.
