About
Professor Vaillant is a historian appointed in the Department of Communication and Media and the Department of History (affiliate faculty) at the University of Michigan. His research addresses transnational media and communication history, the social and cultural history of American music and sound studies, and the history of U.S. radio broadcasting. He is the author of Across the Waves: How the United States and France Shaped the International Age of Radio (Urbana, 2017) and Sounds of Reform: Progressivism and Music in Chicago, 1873-1935 (Chapel Hill, 2003). His current book project looks at processes of racial formation and the rise of American broadcasting. He has also contributed production and research assistance to several award-winning educational series at NPR and PBS.
