The Fifth Annual Anthropology & History Symposium: Excess

Friday, February 21, 2014
12:00 AM
1014 Tisch Hall

Symposium organizers invite faculty and advanced PhD candidates to present on topics related to the broad theme of "Excess." Possible topics could include examinations of the production of excess, from waste to wealth, and its effects on social and political relations; assessments of how we inhabit and experience excess, whether material or spiritual, on a daily basis or in the midst of an event such as carnival; and analyses of how we measure, evaluate, and give meaning to excess or its products, such as the abundance of carbon dioxide produced by human industry. In short, we welcome presentations on a variety of economic, religious, social, cultural, and environmental topics.

Additionally, the symposium invites presenters to discuss how excess affects disciplinary methodologies. Not only do we have access to more information than ever before, but academics are also producing more scholarship. As scholars, how do we navigate this sea of data? And how does our scholarly production capitalize on while also contributing to this excess of data?
