Applying for Certificate Programs

Admissions Process

Admissions for the Certificate programs are considered twice a year. The deadline for Fall Term is March 1st, and Winter Term is November 1st.  Students, however, may apply at any time. We recommend applying early in your graduate program to take full advantage of our community resources and funding opportunities.

Applicants must be enrolled in a degree-granting program at the University of Michigan and must have completed at least one term of graduate study at U-M prior to their intended admission term. They must also be in good academic standing and have the approval of both their graduate advisor and the Graduate Director of the Women’s and Gender Studies Department.

At the time of application, students must submit the following materials via the WGS Graduate Certificate Application:

1. A 300-600 word statement of purpose detailing your interest in the Certificate Program and your background in WGS or LGBTQ Studies.
2. A letter of support from your proposed WGS advisor (must be affiliated with WGS) should be sent directly to wgs.graduate.program@umich.edu.
3. An unofficial U-M transcript.
4. For current Rackham Students: Complete Rackham’s Dual Admission online form, including the Pre-Approval Form for Dual Admissions.
5. For non-Rackham Graduate Students: Complete Rackham’s online application, submit required materials/transcripts, and pay the application fee. Graduate Certificate applicants do not need new test scores but must submit final official undergraduate transcripts to Rackham.
6. Once you have completed the Rackham online application, send an email to wgs.graduate.program@umich.edu.

Note: Courses for the certificate should be registered under Rackham. Dual-enrollment is allowed.
