Climate Change and Sustainability

Prerequisites: open to students who have taken one of the following classes: Introduction to Global Change (BIOLOGY 110, CLIMATE 171, EARTH 171, ENVIRON 110, RCNSCI 110), Climate Change and Sustainability (CLIMATE 172/EARTH 172/ENVIRON 111/GEOG 111), Ecological Issues (ENVIRION 201) and/or Sustainability Issues in the Great Lakes Region (ENVIRON 305).

*Note: This course runs August 10-22, 2020, but you will enroll for FALL term credit. You are financially responsible for these credits, but you may not have to pay additional tuition if your total fall credits are within 12-18 hours. Students taking fewer than 12 or more than 18 credit hours will be assessed fees on those credits.

You will live at the Biological Station for the duration of the course. Your room and board is covered by UMBS Transforming Learning scholarships.

Course Description

This class will investigate the sustainability challenges related to food production, forest productivity, biodiversity loss, energy and waste generation and invasive species. You will visit farms, forests, factories, wetlands, water treatment facilities and energy generation sites. Hear from experts in a variety of fields about how they are trying to “green” their practice and what challenges they face.

ENROLLMENT/REGISTRATION

Fill out the UMBS Application. You will be issued a course permission to enroll in Prof. Arnaboldi's section of ENVIRON 300 (Independent Study) for the Fall 2020 semester.
