Research Fellowships

We invite research scientists and graduate students from any institution to apply to conduct their research at the University of Michigan Biological Station. UMBS offers an optimal location for research in ecology and evolutionary biology. We have a variety of habitats on or near Station property and state-of-the-art equipment and facilities for data collection and analysis. For many research sites, we have long-term or historical data sets for baseline or reference points. Additionally, alumni gifts and University sources have provided limited funding to assist graduate students who are working toward their degree while in residence at the Station and research PIs starting research programs at the Station or experiencing a gap in funding. Graduate Student Fellowship (expand for details)

Graduate students can apply for research support fellowships for the upcoming field season by completing a new research proposal on the UMBS Research Gateway. New research proposal applications contain a section to apply for fellowships. Allowable expenses include UMBS housing, dining, and research fees and will be calculated by the provided estimate of time at the field station in your submitted proposal. Salaries, travel, and research supplies are not allowable expenses.

This section will request graduate students to explain how their project will benefit from support and the amount of time at the field station the student requests support for. The remainder of the new research proposal will request specific information related to proposed research like methods, location, individuals involved, current funding, and data management.

All graduate students applying for fellowships must submit a new research proposal annually, please see Project Proposal and Renewal section of website for more details.

All fellowship recipients must provide an annual progress report after recieving support. Link to Annual Progress Report.

Graduate Student Awards and Fellowships

Ann Arbor Farm and Garden Association Award: Annual award to one or more graduate researchers. Sponsored by the Ann Arbor Farm and Garden Association.
Marian P. and David M. Gates Graduate Student Support: Provides support for graduate education for students studying at the Biological Station.
Henry Allan Gleason Fellowship: Awards to graduate students to enable them to pursue advanced study in plant ecology.
J.B. and Marilyn McKenzie Graduate Student Fellowship: Supports graduate student study at UMBS.
Vaden and Maxine Miles Fund: Provides scholarship or fellowship support for graduate students studying ornithology at UMBS.
Mort Neff Graduate Student Scholarship: Provides graduate student research and study at UMBS.
Stellanova and Chase S. Osborn Endowment: Supports research based at the Osborn Preserve on Sugar Island.
Ralph E. Bennett Endowment: Support for an annual lecture on mycology and plant biology. Any excess can support student research in mycology and plant biology.
Biological Station Fund for Interdisciplinary Graduate Student Support: Fellowship support for graduate students.

Brenda Fancher Dorsey In Gratitude Fund: Provides fellowship support for U-M graduate student research at UMBS.

Scientist fellowships are intended to provide seed funding to support new/pilot projects or to supplement the revisiting of long-term studies. These fellowships can provide funding that pays for research fees, room, and board while doing work at UMBS.
