Bill graduated from LS&A in 1970 with an AB in Pre-Legal Studies. He graduated from Harvard Law School in 1973. He is a senior partner with Kirkland & Ellis in Chicago specializing in corporate, mergers and acquisitions and securities law. He joined Kirkland in 1973, spent three years on active duty as a Lieutenant U.S.N.R. (1974-1977), and then rejoined Kirkland. He and his wife, Anne Fraumann, nee Derleth (LS&A 1971), come from Michigan families going back to grandparents. Their children Ellen and Robert graduated from LS&A and Robert and Sarah received MDs from UM Medical School. His other activities include Chair of the Chicago Humanities Festival, Trustee of the United Stated Rugby Football Foundation, and member of the University of Michigan Institute for the Humanities, Board of Visitors since 1999. He served on the Visiting Committee of the University of Michigan, College of Literature, Science and the Arts from 1990 to 2000.
