Impact Stories
Thanks to your support, our outstanding undergraduate students can accomplish their goals, whether as members of one of our exceptional student organizations, doing research as part of our robust honors program, or interning for a local campaign. Read their stories below!
Undergraduate Political Science Association (UPSA)
UPSA hosts events and workshops to facilitate a better understanding of politics and political issues on campus. These events range from guest speakers to trivia nights to watch parties, allowing students to build collegial relationships with their peers and Faculty.
"UPSA has opened up so many doors for me in local Ann Arbor politics. A candidate came to speak to us freshman year; I began working as a volunteer on his campaign and ended up in a paid position. Since then, I have had the opportunity to work on three campaigns. If it wasn't for UPSA, I am not sure I would have ever gotten these opportunities."
—Seth Friedman, 2022-2023 UPSA President
Michigan Mock Trial (MMT)
MMT is an entirely undergraduate student-led team of about two dozen students majoring in programs across the University who travel around the country to compete with other University teams in a packed courtroom simulation. Teams must be prepared to argue both sides of a criminal or civil case and serve as attorneys and witnesses.
"Being a part of Michigan Mock Trial has transformed my undergraduate experience. Through MMT, I competed all over the country, learning about the world of law from real lawyers and judges. MMT has given me skills and friendships that will last a lifetime."
—Emily Kopp, 2022-2023 Michigan Mock Trial Logistics Chair
Academic Experience Fund
The Academic Experience Fund Program helps support our undergraduate students by providing small amounts of funding (up to $500) to facilitate academic experiences beyond the traditional U-M classroom that advance students’ understanding of political science as a discipline. Students may use the funding to support plans for conference attendance, internships, or research projects.
"My name is Kylie Chicilli, and I am a senior at U-M, double majoring in Political Science and International Studies. I am currently abroad in Sorrento, Italy, at Sant'Anna Institute, taking classes to finish my degrees. I also participate in an international internship program for D.R.O.P., a local LGBTQ+ civil rights and human rights advocacy organization. This experience has taught me much about intercultural communication, policy, and D.E.I. research and the importance of a well-rounded, diverse experience. Attending school abroad and interning internationally has been the most rewarding and educational experience thus far in my life. I have grown professionally, educationally, and socially and will forever hold this experience as something special in my heart. This would not be possible without the support of the scholarships the Political Science Department and the University of Michigan provides, and I am very grateful to have the aid and support of my educational institution."
