Transfer Credit

The Department of Political Science allows students to take and transfer courses from other institutions to the University of Michigan for prerequisite and upper level major credit through the departmental approval process described below. Transfer courses must be approved by the Department if they are to count toward any Political Science prerequisite or major requirements. Transfer courses may be applied to the Political Science major, but at least twelve of the thirty upper level credits must be completed in residence. The Department does review coursework for potential transfer students to determine how coursework from another institution could be applied to the Political Science major.

Note: the two 400 level courses or one 400 level course and one Upper Level Writing Course required to complete the Political Science major must be completed in residence.

• Check the  Transfer Credit Equivalency (TCE) website to see if the class has already been approved to transfer to UM.
  • If the class is listed on the TCE website as transferring as equivalent credit (i.e. POLSCI 111), then no additional steps are required.
  • If the class is listed on the TCE website as transferring as departmental credit (i.e. POLSCI Dept.) submit the course syllabus to polsci-advisor@umich.edu to have the course evaluated.
  • If the class is not listed on the TCE website, submit an evaluation request using the Transfer Credit Equivalency Request Form. If you are informed that the course transfers as departmental credit, submit the course syllabus to polsci-advisor@umich.edu to have it evaluated.

• Check the Transfer Credit Equivalency (TCE) website to see if the class has already been approved to transfer to UM.
  • If the class is not listed on the TCE, then it has not previously been evaluated for transfer.
  • Submit the course syllabus to the Department of Political Science at polsci-advisor@umich.edu for evaluation.
